  19. MEMORY RECOMMENDATIONS
  20.  
  21. You need 560K free low memory and 1024K free EMS memory to play the game.
  22. If you can free up even more memory, the game will play faster. 
  23. We recommend playing the game with 2048K (or more) free EMS memory.
  24. The game will also play faster if you can free up more low memory.
  25.  
  26. Use the MEM command (with DOS 4.0 or higher) or the CHKDSK command 
  27. (with versions of DOS before 4.0) to see how much free memory you have
  28. in your computer.  Refer to your DOS manual for more information on
  29. freeing up low memory and EMS memory.

  33. INSTALLATION AND SETUP
  34.  
  35. To install the game for the first time, you need to run the INSTALL.EXE 
  36. program on the CD-ROM.  Make sure you have about 10MB of free space on 
  37. your hard disk before you begin.  Installation will take 2 or 3 minutes.
  38.  
  39. If you are running EGA instead of VGA, run the program INSTEGA.EXE instead.
  40.  
  41. If you change your sound card after you install the game for the first
  42. time, type the following commands from the DOS prompt before you play the
  43. game again.
  44.

  48.  
  49. The SETUP program will customize the game for your sound card.  You do NOT
  50. need to run the SETUP program if you have already run the INSTALL program
  51. and selected your sound card settings; the SETUP program is only necessary
  52. if you need to _change_ your sound card settings.

  56. PROBLEMS WITH NCACHE
  57.  
  58. You may experience game freezes or erratic mouse behavior if you use the
  59. disk cache program NCACHE or NCACHE2 with expanded memory.  If you use one 
  60. of these programs and you experience problems, try running the program with 
  61. the flag
  62.  
  63. NCACHE /ext
  64.  
  65. or
  66.  
  67. NCACHE2 /ext
  68.  
  69. This may solve the problem.  If you continue to experience problems,
  70. try to set up your memory configuration so you have 1500K free EMS memory
  71. before you begin.  If you still experience problems, try disabling NCACHE 
  72. before running the game.

  76. SOUND CARDS
  77.  
  78. If you have a sound card that is not listed in the INSTALL program:
  79.  
  80. First try installing the game with the option "100% SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE".
  81. If this option does not work, try tweaking your BLASTER variable as listed
  82. below in the "Troubleshooting" section, below.
  83.  
  84. If you just can't make it work, then install the game again, using the 
  85. option "MOSTLY SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE".  This has a greater chance of
  86. success on certain machines, but the sound quality will be lower with some
  87. pops and clicks in the speech.
  88.  
  89. Technical explanation:  All sound cards except "MOSTLY SOUND BLASTER
  90. COMPATIBLE" use a feature of most sound cards called "autoinitialize DMA".
  91. If you know that your computer system or sound card does not support this
  92. feature, you will have to use the "MOSTLY SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE" setting.

  96. TROUBLESHOOTING
  97.  
  98. Q:   "I don't hear any speech."
  99.  
  100. A:   1.  Make sure you have speakers or headphones hooked up to your sound
  101.          card, and that you have turned up the volume by using the volume
  102.          controls on the back of the sound card, or by using a software
  103.          volume control program.  See your sound card manual for details.
  104.  
  105.      2.  Make sure you are not running a DOS shell from Windows or any other
  106.          program that will shell to DOS.  To ensure this, type the word EXIT 
  107.          at the C: prompt.  If nothing happens, go on to step 3.                                            
  108.  
  109.      3.  Make sure you selected the correct sound card settings when you ran
  110.          the INSTALL program.  If you need to change these settings, go into
  111.          the TREKCD directory on your hard disk and type SETUP.  (See
  112.          "Installation and Setup," above.)
  113.      
  114.      4.  If you still don't hear any speech, there may be an error in the
  115.          SET BLASTER variable in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Make sure that this
  116.          statement correctly reflects the IRQ and DMA settings of your sound
  117.          card.  The installation program that came with your sound card 
  118.          probably correctly set up the SET BLASTER statement.  Just in case 
  119.          the statement is wrong, try putting one (and only one) of these 
  120.          statements in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

  122.          SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3
  123.          SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T3
  124.  
  125.          These two statements are typical of most sound cards.  If you have 
  126.          altered your sound card settings, be sure to adjust the SET BLASTER 
  127.          statement accordingly.
  128.  
  129.      5.  If the settings are correct and you still don't hear any speech,
  130.          try using the 100% SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE setting in the SETUP 
  131.          program.
  132.  
  133.      6.  If you still don't hear any speech, try using the MOSTLY SOUND   
  134.          BLASTER COMPATIBLE setting in the SETUP program.
  135.  
  136.  
  137. Q:   "The background sounds seem to have a fragment of speech in them, or
  138.      sometimes it sounds like the background sounds seem to hiccup."
  139.  
  140. A:   Check your CONFIG.SYS file and see if there is a /E somewhere after the
  141.      line containing the text "MSCDEX".  If there is a /E, then try removing
  142.      the /E.  This may solve sound problems on certain systems.
  143.

  145. Q:   "It says I don't have enough memory."
  146.  
  147. A:   See page 5 of the manual for some ways to free up more memory for
  148.      the game.

  151. Q:   "The music is too loud."
  152.  
  153. A:   Each sound card comes with a software program that will adjust the
  154.      volume of music and digitized sound that is played through the card.
  155.      See your sound card manual for details on the volume control of your
  156.      particular card.

  158.      If you think the music is drowning out the sound of the voices, you
  159.      should be able to use this volume control program to reduce the volume
  160.      of the music while maintaining the volume of the speech.

  166. This CD-ROM contains a number of demonstration versions of other Interplay
  167. games.  To get to the demos, type DEMOS from the root directory of your
  168. CD-ROM.
